When you are working with ill patients and a stress-filled job as a nurse, keeping healthy yourself should be a priority. Unfortunately, while caring for others, we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves. Here are tips that you can do to optimize your own health as a nurse.
Start with a good foundation: eat well! Most nurses work in a fast-paced environment and are often short on time, which can lead us to rely on fast food that is high in fat, sodium, sugar, and additives. Look for ways to add more lean proteins, fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Get creative about exercise. It doesn’t really matter what the exercise is, just fit some in wherever you can. Find activities you enjoy and commit to doing them for at least 30 minutes several days a week. Don’t like to jog? Walk. Hate lifting weights? March in place with soup cans while watching your favorite TV show. Increase your steps as a baseline. Be imaginative.
Join healthy employee initiatives. Get fitter at your workplace. Not only are you taking charge to improve your health, you build camaraderie with your coworkers as you work toward your goals together.
Boost Your Emotional Health. Nurses nurture others, but we often do a poor job of nurturing ourselves. Identify and pursue your goals, both educational and professional. Cultivate healthy relationships. Keep the good ones in your life and step back from or eliminate the ones that are toxic or drain your energy.
Protect your sleep. Adequate sleep protects your health. Make a date with your pillow and keep it so you feel motivated and ready for a new day. (Ref: dailynurse.com)
